History

Elisha Roberts (1774-1844) was among the earliest prominent settlers of San Augustine County, building a home east of Ayish Bayou around 1824 and erecting one of the area's first cotton gins in 1825. He served as alcalde in 1831 and as a delegate to the 1833 convention, and his house was a well-known stopping place said to have hosted figures such as Sam Houston, James Bowie, and Stephen F. Austin. In 1835-36 he furnished provisions and support to the Texas revolutionary cause. A Texas Centennial marker was placed in 1936.
