History

The Old Garrett House stands about eleven miles west of San Augustine on State Highway 21 and was built around 1857-1861 for planter William Garrett using enslaved labor. Its long five-bay facade, recessed full-width porch beneath an extended gable roof, and unusually large scale make it a notable example of early Texas frontier building with Greek Revival touches. The home was documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1934 and received a Texas historical marker in 1962.
