History

Trammel's Trace was an early overland route into Texas from the north, following American Indian trails from the Red River south to Nacogdoches, where it joined the El Camino Real. It is named for Nicholas Trammell, credited with opening the roughly 180-mile trail in the 1810s-1820s; once a smugglers' path, it later became a major immigration road for settlers from Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, and beyond. The Rusk County marker near Henderson was placed in 1936.
