History

This marker commemorates Fort Leaton, the fortified adobe home and trading post built by frontier trader Ben Leaton about 1848 on the Rio Grande near Presidio. Rising on the site of an earlier Spanish outpost at La Junta de los Rios, it became a hub for freighters traveling the Chihuahua Trail and briefly served as the first seat of Presidio County. The State of Texas acquired the ruins in 1967, and today the restored complex is Fort Leaton State Historic Site.
