Designed by the El Paso firm Trost & Trost in the Spanish Revival style, the El Paisano Hotel opened in Marfa in 1930, built by the Gateway Hotel Company in anticipation of a local oil boom that never came; its 1929 groundbreaking came just days before the Black Tuesday stock-market crash. The hotel is best known as the headquarters for the cast and crew of the 1956 film Giant during the summer of 1955, when James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, and Rock Hudson stayed there. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
