Isaac Reed was a Baptist minister who came to Texas from Tennessee in 1834 and in 1835 bought a league of land in southwestern Panola County, near present Bethel, southwest of Carthage. Often called one of the first Baptist ministers in Texas, he organized Bethel Church with fellow minister Lemuel Herrin in 1843. Reed was killed in 1848 and is buried at Old Bethel Cemetery; the State of Texas placed a memorial marker to him in 1936.
