Bethany is a small community in northeastern Panola County on the Louisiana state line, first settled about 1840 as a stopping point for settlers coming to Texas from the Old South. Originally called Vernon, it was renamed Bethany around 1849 when a post office opened, and in its early years it supported a log store, tavern, water-powered gristmill, and tannery. The town declined after the Civil War but revived economically in the 1920s with the opening of the Bethany gas field.
