Designed by J. N. Carnes and completed in 1891, the old Panola County Jail in Carthage is a two-story brick building blending Italianate and Romanesque details, with a projecting tower, arched openings, and corbelled brickwork. It served as the county jail for 62 years and as a city jail from 1953 to 1965, and after a 1988 restoration it became a community museum housing the Leila Belle LaGrone Family History Library & Museum. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
