History

Belgrade was founded in 1837 by William McFarland on the Sabine River in what became Newton County, making it the county's first organized town. A busy riverport served by steamboats along the old Coushatta Trace, it was renamed Biloxi from 1853 to 1860 before reverting to Belgrade, and it competed unsuccessfully to become county seat. River trade collapsed as railroads reached East Texas in the early 1900s, and the townsite was eventually abandoned.
