The marker honors Rev. Henry Stephenson, an early Methodist preacher who ventured into Texas as early as 1824 and in 1834 was placed in charge of the Methodist effort in the region despite Mexican opposition to Protestant ministers. He moved to Texas in 1835 and settled on Cow Creek in what is now Newton County. Stephenson died at Jasper on November 20, 1841, and was buried at Burkeville.
