The Addie L. and A.T. Odom Homestead, dating to 1922, lies in the Shankleville community near Burkeville, one of Texas's Freedom Colonies founded by formerly enslaved people after emancipation. Addie and A.T. Odom built a new life and home in Newton County there, and the property has become a cultural landmark hosting the Texas Purple Hull Pea Festival since 2014. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.
