The Indian Trading Post marks the site of a log trading post built in 1838 by Dr. George Washington Hill near Indian Spring, at the direction of Sam Houston, to encourage peaceful relations with area tribes. Hill had been appointed an agent to the Kickapoo in 1836, making him a natural choice to operate the post. It served tribes including the Kickapoo, Ionies and Comanches during the turbulent early settlement of what became Navarro County.
