This marker recalls that Melrose, in Nacogdoches County, was the site of the first drilled well to produce oil in Texas. In 1866 driller Lyne T. Barret and the Melrose Petroleum Oil Company struck oil at about 106 feet, and the well yielded around ten barrels a day, the state's first commercial oil production. The site also saw Texas's first attempts at refining oil, its first steel storage tanks, and its first pipeline; a state marker was placed in 1967.
