History

Hayden S. Arnold (1805-1839), a Tennessee native who settled at Nacogdoches, was elected captain of the local company on March 6, 1836, and led the Nacogdoches troops as part of Colonel Sidney Sherman's Second Regiment at the Battle of San Jacinto. After independence he represented Nacogdoches in the House of the First Congress of the Republic of Texas. He died in 1839 and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, where a Texas Centennial marker was placed in 1936.
