History

At Oil Springs, about thirteen miles east of Nacogdoches near Woden, Lyne T. Barret drilled the first producing oil well in Texas, striking oil at 106 feet in 1866 after first leasing the land in 1859. The site also saw the state's first attempt at refining oil, its first commercial oilfield, its first steel storage tanks, and its first pipeline. The discovery well was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
