History

Forestburg, in southeastern Montague County, was first settled by cattlemen in the early 1850s but grew slowly for two decades because of frequent Indian raids. Originally called Horn Hill and then Forest Hill for the grove of live oaks around it, the community was renamed Forestburg when a post office opened in 1876, since Texas already had a Forest Hill. By 1885 it had about 200 residents along with sawmills and cotton gins, and the 1936 Centennial marker honors its pioneers.
