John Garner (1809-1888) served under Erastus 'Deaf' Smith during the Texas Revolution and helped destroy Vince's Bridge on April 21, 1836, an act that cut off escape routes on the day of the Battle of San Jacinto. He later lived in Milam County, where he died in 1888. The State of Texas placed his marker at Rockdale in 1962.
