The Dog Town Jail was the first county jail of McMullen County, built in 1880 at a cost of about $2,800 in the settlement that became Tilden. The town had been called Dog Town because ranchers used packs of dogs to round up wild cattle in the brush country. Early purchases for the new jail included leg irons, handcuffs and blankets, and the sturdy stone building was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1966.
