Dr. Rufus Columbus Burleson (1823-1901) was a Baptist pioneer preacher and educator who served as president of Baylor University at Independence from 1851 to 1861 and as president of Waco University. After the two schools merged, he led Baylor at Waco until 1897, helping to define the university's Baptist identity. A Texas Centennial marker was placed in 1936.
