Liberty County grew out of the Mexican municipality centered on the town founded May 5, 1831 as the "Villa de la Santisima Trinidad de la Libertad." The county was created in 1836, and at its 1837 extent it took in all of present Tyler County and parts of Hardin, Chambers, San Jacinto, and Polk counties. The town of Liberty, incorporated June 7, 1837, has remained the county seat; the marker was placed in 1936.
