History

St. Paul Lutheran Church was founded by Wendish (Sorbian) immigrants who, led by Pastor Johann Kilian, sailed from Germany in 1854 and settled the community they named Serbin. The congregation laid the cornerstone of a frame church in 1859 and completed its present stone church in 1871, a building noted for the tallest pulpit in Texas, set above the altar, and a two-story plan that seated men in the upper gallery. Its interior was elaborately hand-painted by parishioners in 1906, making it the only non-Catholic 'painted church' in Texas, and the congregation was among the earliest of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in the state.
