Charles Armand Schreiner (1838-1927), a French-born former Texas Ranger, settled in Kerr County in 1857 and moved to Kerrville in 1869, where he opened the general store that grew into the Schreiner mercantile and banking empire. He pioneered the local wool and mohair trade, and by 1900 his ranching interests spanned some 600,000 acres from Kerrville to Menard. Elected captain of a home-guard company in 1875, he carried the title for life and gave more than a million dollars to charity, including the founding of Schreiner Institute.
