History

The original Kent County Courthouse was raised in the county seat of Clairemont in 1893, an Italianate sandstone building of two stories with a central square tower designed by the firm of Martin, Byrnes & Johnston. It served until the county seat moved to Jayton in the mid-1950s after a two-year court battle. The upper story later burned, but the lower story of the old capitol still stands in Clairemont.
