The Italianate two-story building was constructed of red sandstone with a sheet metal cornice, hipped roof with dormers and a central square tower capped with a pyramidal roof. Following a fire in 1944, the second floor, tower and dormers were removed.

The original Kent County Courthouse was raised in the county seat of Clairemont in 1893, an Italianate sandstone building of two stories with a central square tower designed by the firm of Martin, Byrnes & Johnston. It served until the county seat moved to Jayton in the mid-1950s after a two-year court battle. The upper story later burned, but the lower story of the old capitol still stands in Clairemont.
