The building features a mansard roof with ornamental cresting, corner round towers with conical roofs and finials, rounded arch window openings and entry with a stained glass lunette transom, and a square brick and limestone clocktower with gable dormers inersecting a pyramidal roof with finial.

Construction of the Karnes County Courthouse in Karnes City began in 1894 under architect John Cormack, whose partner Jacob A. Astor completed the building in 1895 after Cormack's death. The three-story rusticated brick courthouse combined Second Empire and Richardsonian Romanesque elements, with projecting mansard towers, cylindrical corner towers, and a central clock tower. Karnes City had become the county seat in 1893 after the railroad bypassed the former seat at Helena.
