History

Andrew Farney Smyth, born in 1817, came to Texas in 1835 to join the revolution, enlisting with the Jasper Volunteers. He built a career as a riverman, constructing flatboats and the keelboat Jasper to float cotton and other goods down the Angelina and Neches rivers to the Gulf at Sabine Pass. Smyth died in Beaumont in 1879 and is buried in Magnolia Cemetery, where a Texas state marker honors his revolutionary service.
