History

Beaumont grew from a settlement on the west bank of the Neches River, where Noah and Nancy Tevis farmed beginning in the 1820s at a place called Tevis Bluff. In 1835 the land was bought by Henry Millard and partners, and the town of Beaumont was laid out and incorporated in 1838. The most credible account holds that Millard named the town for his wife's maiden name, Beaumont; it became the seat of Jefferson County and a center of lumber, rice, ranching, and later oil.
