History

Elijah Stapp (1783-1843), a Virginia native and early Texas settler, took his seat at the Convention of 1836 on March 1 and signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. He died in Jackson County in 1843 and was buried at what became Russell Ward Cemetery northeast of Edna. A 1936 Centennial marker on the Jackson County courthouse grounds commemorates him.
