San Pedro Cemetery in San Marcos is a significant Mexican American burial ground in Hays County, founded in the early 1900s by farm-laboring families who, barred from segregated cemeteries, formed a mutualista (mutual aid society) to pool resources and buy land so their community would have a dignified place of burial. The mutualista remains active, and the cemetery holds more than 1,700 graves, many of families who trace their roots to its founders.
