This marker honors Claiborne West (1803-1866), a Tennessee-born statesman who settled in the Seguin area and became a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. West served as a delegate to the 1832 and 1836 conventions and the 1835 Consultation, sat on the Council of the provisional government, and later served as a soldier and congressman of the Republic of Texas. The commemorative marker stands within Riverside Cemetery in Seguin.
