Claiborne Rector (1802-1873), an Alabama native, fought as a soldier of the Texas Revolution and served at the Battle of San Jacinto in Capt. William H. Patton's company. He settled in the La Vernia area in the late 1840s, running a stage stop and blacksmith shop that served travelers on the Chihuahua Road, and in 1852 helped organize the Cibolo Presbyterian Church. He died in 1873 and was buried in Concrete Cemetery; the state erected his marker in 1962.
