This Goliad house was the home of Judge Pryor Lea (1794-1879), a Tennessee-born lawyer and former U.S. congressman who moved to Goliad in 1846 to promote railroads. Believing Aransas Bay could serve as East Texas's best port, Lea made preliminary surveys for a line linking San Antonio to the coast through Goliad. Well regarded locally, he was elected a delegate to the 1875 Constitutional Convention but declined because of his advanced age; the marker was placed in 1962.
