History

The Old Post Sanitarium was built in 1912 as the first modern hospital in West Texas, a two-story native-stone building with tall white columns that contained a laboratory, x-ray room, operating room and about twenty-five private patient rooms. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1964 and later given to Garza County. The building survives intact on the National Register of Historic Places and now houses the Garza County Historical Museum, which preserves the original operating room and early medical equipment.
