As a teenager, Joseph F. Fenner left Alabama in 1835 with his brother to fight for Texas independence as one of Capt. Jack Shackelford's "Alabama Red Rovers." He was among the Texan prisoners at Goliad in 1836 but survived the massacre because he was away on patrol at the time of the surrender. He is remembered with a marker at Grove Hill Cemetery in Fannin County.
