History

Blanton Chapel, a Methodist congregation in south-central Fannin County west of Leonard, was organized in 1872 by the Rev. Benjamin F. Blanton, who had just been licensed to preach and built the first chapel with the help of his neighbors. Blanton led the congregation for roughly the next two decades and preached there until his death in 1917. The chapel was rebuilt after storm damage around 1910 and is recognized as the oldest family chapel in continuous use in the county, carrying a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark designation.
