Quarters Number 1 is part of the historic officers' housing at Fort Bliss in El Paso, the sprawling Army post established in the mid-19th century to guard the border and the routes west. The post's officers' quarters were built with hewn-stone foundations and thick double-laid adobe walls, and a substantial set of quarters for the commanding officer was added during the early 1900s as Fort Bliss expanded. Quarters Number 1 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its association with that development.
