History

A 1936 Texas Centennial marker near Sanger, about three miles north of Bolivar, records the site of the home of cattleman John Simpson Chisum, known as the 'White House,' which he occupied from 1856 to 1862. Chisum came to Denton County in 1854 and built a large cattle operation before moving west, where he became famous as the 'Cattle King of the Pecos' in New Mexico. He died in 1884 and was buried in Paris, Texas.
