The Old Continental State Bank in Roanoke was built in 1906 as the town's first bank, ending decades in which residents had to travel to Fort Worth or Denton to handle cash. Its president, "Lifey" Brand, later became Texas banking commissioner and was credited with helping save Texas banks during the Great Depression. Built of light-tan brick with a corbeled parapet and false corner chimneys, it is the most intact of Roanoke's few remaining historic commercial buildings and is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
