History

The Cochran County Courthouse in Morton was built in 1926, soon after the county was organized in 1924 and Morton chosen as county seat. Designed by architect W. R. Kaufman in a Texas Renaissance style, the two-story building was substantially remodeled in a modern idiom in 1968, when an addition by Stiles, Roberts and Messersmith was also constructed. It remains the seat of county government on landscaped grounds at the center of Morton.
