James H. Bowman (1820-1886) served in the army of the Republic of Texas in 1836. Never married, he devoted his later years to his community near Wells in Cherokee County, in 1875 donating one hundred acres to establish a Methodist church at Mount Hope along with adjoining land for a cemetery. He is buried in the Old Mount Hope Cemetery, where the State of Texas placed his marker in 1936.
