The Battle of Palo Alto, fought on the prairie north of present Brownsville on May 8, 1846, was the first major engagement of the Mexican-American War. General Zachary Taylor's roughly 2,400 U.S. troops repelled a larger Mexican force under General Mariano Arista, aided by the effective use of mobile 'flying artillery.' The battlefield is now preserved as Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park.
