The Matagorda Island Lighthouse is a 55-foot cast-iron tower first lit on December 21, 1852 to guide ships through Pass Cavallo into Matagorda Bay. Confederate forces damaged it during the Civil War, and in 1873 the tower was dismantled and rebuilt two miles inland using the original iron plates. It is Texas's oldest operational lighthouse, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, and is now managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife.
