Thomas Jefferson Sweeny (1812-1869), a Tennessee native, came to Texas in 1833 and settled in present Brazoria County. He fought at the Battle of San Jacinto in Captain William H. Patton's Columbia Company and was honorably discharged in 1837, later receiving a land grant for his service. He is buried in the Sweeny family cemetery in the town that bears his name.
