Dr. James Aeneas Phelps arrived in Texas with Stephen F. Austin's original colonists in 1822 and received a land grant in present Brazoria County, where he established the Orozimbo plantation. Following the Texas Revolution, the captured Mexican general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was held at Phelps's home from July to November 1836, and Phelps is credited with preventing Santa Anna's suicide. In gratitude, Santa Anna later intervened to spare Phelps's son Orlando from execution after the Mier expedition.
