The Masonic Oak in Brazoria's Old Brazoria Cemetery marks the spot where, in March 1835, Anson Jones and five fellow Masons met to petition the Grand Lodge of Louisiana for a charter to form a lodge. Their petition led to Holland Lodge, chartered in December 1835, the first Masonic lodge in Texas, and the meetings under the tree helped give rise in 1837 to the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas.
