Bethel Presbyterian Church, one of the oldest Presbyterian congregations in Texas, was organized June 13, 1840, by Rev. William Y. Allen with ten members, on land given by Mrs. J. H. Bell. Rev. Hugh Wilson, sometimes called the 'Father of Texas Presbyterianism,' preached the first sermon. Over the years the congregation used several buildings in the Columbia area. The state historical marker was erected in 1966.
