History

The Gazebo for James Richard Marmion in Sweeny is a work of faux bois ('false wood') sculpture, in which sculptor Dionicio Rodriguez (1891-1955) shaped and colored concrete to imitate natural wood and bark. The Mexican-born artist created many such garden structures across the South, and this example was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004 for its artistic significance under a thematic listing of his Texas work.
