William Berry Smith came to Texas from North Carolina in 1834 and served as a soldier in the Texas War for Independence, also seeing action in the Indian wars of the frontier. He settled in the Iredell area of Bosque County and died June 30, 1876. He is buried in the Smith-Pitts Cemetery, where the State of Texas placed a grave marker in the 1950s at the urging of his descendants.
