History
This Catholic burial ground serves Kovar, a Czech-Moravian farm community settled after Martin Kovar arrived about 1870. The cemetery land was donated in 1883 by M. J. Ziegelbauer, and a church once stood across from it before fire destroyed the building; the present white frame Sts. Peter and Paul Church, seating just 75 beneath a domed ceiling, was raised by parishioners in 1921. Descendants of the founding families still maintain the church and cemetery under St. Paul Parish in Smithville, and Mass is offered on All Souls Day and the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul.
