Calvary Episcopal Church in Bastrop was organized in 1869 and built what is now the town's oldest church building; its cornerstone was laid on August 11, 1881 and the first services were held April 25, 1883. Col. Higgins financed the building as a memorial to his son Horace, a lay reader who had died of typhoid fever in 1880. The Gothic-influenced church was designed by architect Jasper Preston, who also designed the Bastrop County Courthouse and Austin's Driskill Hotel.
