Homer served as the third county seat of Angelina County after being chosen in 1856 and platted by county surveyor William G. Lang in 1857. It remained the seat, for a time renamed Angelina, until the railroad-favored town of Lufkin took the title in 1892, after which Homer declined. The State of Texas marked the townsite in 1936.
